How We Can Work Together
Beth Walker in her book “Never Pay Retail For College” suggests that parents should treat college like a large project, likening it to a kitchen remodel. If you’ve remodeled a kitchen, you know how large a project it is and how many skilled craftspeople it takes to get it done.
Given today’s staggering college costs, Beth suggests that to improve the odds of a successful college outcome, academically and financially, parents should assemble their team in much the same way:
· Tax Advisor
· Financial Advisor
· Independent Educational Consultant
· College Financial Planner (that’s me!)
Now, I realize that many families don’t have tax or financial advisors – they handle it themselves and that’s fine. The point remains the same - tax, financial and college planning should be done together to make sure that one does not negatively impact the other. As a Certified Financial Planner and CPA (inactive), I understand how the pieces fit together.
There are many steps in the college financial process. Depending on your situation and the amount of support you need, you have 3 options. In the chart below, I’ve listed those options.
